As an introduction to the academic study of sport and the media, the chapter presents examples of different approaches to the analysis of the sport–media relationship within a broadly defined discipline of cultural history. It looks at key historical periods and their dominant media form in order to give an overview of the evolution – and yet the continuity – of the media in its relation to sport. It presents various ways in which historians have used the press, radio or television as sources for the cultural analysis of key topics: the body, identity of place, celebrity. It aims to give, in passing, a sense of some of the recent debates in the field.
Résumé
Cette introduction à l’étude universitaire de la relation sport et medias présente des exemples de différentes approches analytiques dans la discipline de l’histoire culturelle au sens large. Elle couvre les périodes-clef par rapport à leur forme médiatique dominante pour donner une vue d’ensemble de l’évolution – et la continuité – des medias dans leur relation au sport. Elle illustre diverses façons pour l’historien d’utiliser la presse, la radio ou la télévision comme sources pour l’analyse culturelle d’objets importants, tels le corps, les lieux identitaires, la célébrité. Elle cherche, enfin, à donner une idée de certains débats récents qui ont animé ce champ d’étude.
