High level refereeing, a case of teamwork

Résumé

L’arbitrage est souvent rapporté à un processus décisionnel individuel. Cependant, étudier les caractéristiques de l’arbitrage en situation de matchs nécessite de considérer la participation des membres de l’équipe des officiels à la prise de décision. Ainsi, notre étude interroge les ressorts et modalités de la coordination entre ces membres. Six rencontres de football professionnel ont été observées; dix-huit entretiens d’auto-confrontation ont été menés avec les arbitres centraux et leurs assistants. L’analyse met en évidence des types de coordination relatifs aux modalités de constitution de l’acceptabilité de la situation de jeu et à la manière de montrer aux joueurs ce qui est possible. La coordination des officiels se fonde sur la reconnaissance située des prérogatives de chacun.

Abstract

Refereeing is often brought down to a process of individual decision-making. However, studying the characteristics of how decisions are made during a match entails considering the involvement of the members of the team of officials. Thus, our research investigates the motives and modalities of co-ordination between the team’s members. Six professional football matches have been observed and eighteen auto-confrontation interviews conducted with the referees and their assistants. The analysis highlights types of co-ordination relating to how the playing situation is recognized to be acceptable and how the players are shown what is possible. The officials’ co-ordination is based on the situated recognition of each one’s prerogatives.
