A history of sports techniques and technologies: a franco-French « cultural » matrix of sports history?

Résumé

L’histoire des techniques et des technologies sportives constitue un segment faiblement investi par les historiens. L’avènement tardif de travaux en ce domaine interroge tant les résistances de nature épistémologique (difficulté à penser le geste technique et le corps technicisé du sportif comme objets d’histoire légitimes) que la complexité du champ de force qui organise et structure l’objet. L’importance de l’héritage anthropologique et la difficulté à dépasser les travaux précurseurs de Marcel Mauss sur les « techniques du corps », les enjeux corporatistes et universitaires liés à la définition d’une expertise dans le champ des savoirs du corps, l’influence de la technologie culturelle, l’essor de l’histoire culturelle, la dimension relativement franco-centrée de la recherche, constituent autant d’éléments à prendre en compte dans ce cheminement difficile. Cet article tente de cartographier les dynamiques à l’œuvre dans la construction de l’histoire des techniques sportives, de ses problématiques, et cherche à mieux définir ses apports et son périmètre scientifiques.

Abstract

Traditionally historians have made few inroads into the areas of sports techniques and technologies. Why such advent was late coming can be attributed either to resistances tied to epistmology (technical gesture difficult to apprehend or athlete’s body hardly considered as a technical object worth a legitimate history) or else to a definitely complex field of forces which organizes and structures the object. n order to find one’s way in this difficult path several different elements should be considered: an important anthropological legacy concurrent with the hardly surpassable pionneer works by Marcel Mauss on “body techniques”; the corporatist and academic stakes tied to the definition of an expertise in the field of body intimate knowledge; the influence of cultural technology; the development of cultural history; a relatively inward-centred French research environment. This article tries to draw a map of the dynamics which impel the construction of a history of sports techniques including its problematics and also aims at better defining its scientific contributions and perimeter.
