Mental practice in orthopedic rehabilitation: where, what, and how? A case report

Abstract

The heterogeneity in experimental studies examining the effect of mental practice in orthopaedic rehabilitation settings makes it difficult to design effective training protocols. Furthermore, mental practice techniques used in these studies are often open-ended and unstructured with little guidance from the practitioner. The aim of this report is twofold: (1) to present the implementation of imagery models in the context of frameworks, and (2) to propose a systematic approach for a motor imagery interventions informed by Gentile’s taxonomy of tasks (2000) for the training structure of mental practice in a home-based setting. To illustrate this application within the process of rehabilitative settings we present a case study of a 73-year-old, community-dwelling woman with distal radius fracture.

Résumé

L’hétérogénéité des études expérimentales portant sur l’efficacité de la pratique mentale pour la réadaptation orthopédique ne permet pas de déterminer les modalités de travail les plus propices. De plus, les techniques d’entraînement mental utilisées sont souvent ouvertes et non structurées, avec peu d’indications de la part des praticiens. Le but de ce travail est double : (1) considérer l’apport des modèles de l’imagerie dans la conception des programmes, et (2) proposer une démarche d’intervention basée sur la taxonomie des tâches de Gentile (2000) pour la structuration d’un travail effectué par le patient à domicile. tÀitre d’illustration, nous présentons une étude de cas d’une patiente âgé de 73 ans, victime d’une fracture du radius distal.
