Abstract

Based on a critical reading of relevant literature and in-depth interviews with football referees from various levels of the game in England, the aim of this study is to understand why referees become involved and, more pertinently, why they remain committed to the role despite the abuse and disrespect which they regularly encounter. Having considered the development of the football referee, the essay then examines existing literature concerned with refereeing as well as studies of job commitment in other human-service occupations. The subsequent data analysis leads to conclusions which both confirm and challenge findings of the limited research previously conducted in this area. Finally, the study suggests directions for organisations to follow in order to ensure the retention of referees.

Résumé

À partir d’une revue critique de la littérature et des entretiens avec des arbitres de football anglais de niveaux variés, l’objectif de cette étude est de comprendre pourquoi les arbitres deviennent, et plus important, pourquoi ils restent engagés malgré les insultes et le manque de respect qu’ils subissent régulièrement. Après une analyse du développement de l’arbitre, la présente étude examine la littérature abordant l’arbitrage mais également les travaux abordant l’engagement dans d’autres professions exigeant un contact humain du même type. L’analyse des données mène à des conclusions confirmant les travaux jusqu’alors effectués tout en stimulant les recherches futures. Finalement, afin d’assurer le maintien en exercice des arbitres au sein des organisations, des propositions concrètes sont évoquées.
