Off-ice fitness test explained.

Variable test Measures (Units) [Instrumentation] Protocol
Lower body power Vertical jump Height of jump (cm) [Vertec, U.S.A.] Athletes stand under the testing device to measure their maximum height. Once the height is recorded, they stand at an elbow’s distance from the testing device and perform one pre-trial jump. They bend their legs and pause briefly before jumping while reaching out as high as possible with their hands. The best of three attempts is retained.
Lower body power Broad jump Length of jump (cm) [Tape on floor] The athlete positions both feet behind the line. They quickly bend their legs and swing their arms back and forth to initiate the jump. The athletes must land in control, and once stable on their feet, the foot that travels the least distance is measured. The best of three attempts is retained.
Upper body power Seated medicine ball throw Power (W) [Move Factor Ballistic Ball A2P] Athletes sit on the ground with their backs against the wall and feet separated by 60 cm. They hold the ball against their chest at the sides, a little behind the center, with forearms parallel to the ground. They then throw the ball as hard as possible while keeping their back against the wall. Three attempts are allowed, and the best result is retained.
General strength Grip strength test Sum of grip test (kg) [Jamar dynamometer, Canada] The dynamometer is set to 0 before each test. The athlete grabs the dynamometer in a neutral grip and keeps it close to the hips while standing straight with his elbow fully extended. The athlete exhales heavily and compresses the dynamometer as hard as possible. The athlete then returns the dynamometer to the assessor, who records the result and resets it for the next test. Two attempts per hand are allowed, and the best result per side is retained.
Agility Pro Agility test Time (s) [Swift timing gates] Athletes place their feet on the starting line. They then move to a line from the end past the photocells and touch the line with their hand. Must move as quickly as possible to the line at the other end. Athletes touch the line with their hands before returning to the center as quickly as possible (best of two trials).
